Several of us attended the Constitution Day event in Nevada City. The parade was cool, but what I liked most was the 1700's tent city in the park. All the reenactors (is that a word?), were in period correct clothing, and were extremely knowledgeable of life in the 18th century. And of course, there were muskets!

I've been to our local city hall to propose a Constitution Day event. I spoke to an admin assistant and she gave me several contact emails. I sent out emails to 4 city employees, including the mayor's secretary. It has been over a month, and I still have not heard back. I'll have to stop by again and see if they even got my message.

   (b) Each educational institution that receives Federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such year for the students served by the educational institution.

I found a great resource for the teaching aspect of Constitution Day. It's actually a law that schools who receive federal funds have to teach about the constitution. I will be sharing this document and web site with our city manager when I pitch "Constitution Day" event to him. Check out the NCCS

The U.S. Constitution is the key to securing liberty for all Americans — yet very few know exactly what it says and what freedoms it protects. Hillsdale College is working to make 2015 the “Year of the Constitution,” dedicating this year to educating millions of Americans about this critical document. That’s why the College is offering its most popular course, “Constitution 101″ for free, when you sign up now.

Understand the Constitution like never before – for FREE

Hillsdale’s course, Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution, features the same professors who teach this course on Hillsdale College’s campus. Hillsdale is one of the only colleges in America — outside of the military academies — that requires every student to take a course on the Constitution to graduate.

The course is delivered via email, with one lesson per week for 10 weeks. Each lesson features lively teaching and discussion boards, suggested readings, weekly quizzes, and more.

Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin agree:

“Hillsdale College is the authority on teaching the Constitution.”

I let Constitution Day and week slide by and I'll take my public flogging for it here.  Constitution Week  actually extends to Sept 23rd.  Maybe I'll come up with something this week to lessen the guilt.  Next year, we'll make something happen.  As mentioned in an earlier post by one of our newer members (Bevin Corbin), we have a unique museum in our County seat called the House of Flags.   I know the gentlemen who run it will work with us on an event. And our local veterans groups will be strong partners as well.  Looking forward to 2016.

I love the hat. Maybe we can get some made up with our logo on them!

We had a small celebration in SC. We provided a little (as much as allowed) display for pocket constitutions to exhibit at a local Fiddlers Competition. Mac (Doc) and I flew the big flags across the upstate to cast our shadows at the convention held at Hagood Mill.

We dressed the part… kinda… several folks made the connection between the tricorn hats and the SOLR logos, including a lady with the DAR who introduced herself as a family relation.

May be the next convention should be held in Nevada City! What an outstanding event for constitution day.
